Events App: Cancelled

By Phil Forslund | Tuesday, March 17, 2020

There is now a way to cancel dates in the Events App.

Cancellations happen, and when they do you want to keep the events on the platform to be able to inform people. Cancellations can happen for many reasons: not enough ticket sales, weather (hurricanes, snowstorms) and in the current case, COVID-19. In the past, we would just update the event title with the words *Cancelled*. This could be a problem if the event was recurring where you would need to split off dates or go back in and edit back later. With the newest update, you will be able to cancel a single date occurrence for an event.

A new checkbox has been added to each date occurrence of the When is the Event? section. In the image below you can see the new [  ] Cancelled checkbox and what it shows on the closed date occurrence.

When the Cancelled checkbox is checked, it will replace the time of the event with *** Cancelled ***
This will display in the events calendar as the following:

(In the haste to get this update live, the colored background behind the word *** Cancelled *** is not currently live.)

On the event page, it would show under the This event is happening next on: section.

On the business page event app, it will remove the time with *** Cancelled ***

Reverse publishing:

Once the work for this functionality is completed, it will not change anything with reverse publishing. When a date occurrence is reversed published that is set to Cancelled it will show * Cancelled * in place of the time.

This is still currently being worked on. Cancelled events in reverse publishing will currently show as 12:01 a.m.

As this was haste programming added to the platform to deal with lots of cancelled events due to COVID-19, there could be a lot of things we can do to improve the functionality of this option, but we hope it solves a lot of issues in the short term. Give it a try and let me know how it goes. If you have any questions, comments or other ways to make this functionality better, please feel free to email phil@oneboat.com.
